Le port artificiel d’Arromanches, nom de code Mulberry B

Au lendemain même du Jour J, les Britanniques commencent à installer devant quatre communes normandes, tel un Meccano géant, des installations portuaires équivalent à celles du port de Douvres. Le but ? Débarquer des milliers de combattants, avec armes, vivres et bagages, en attendant de pouvoir mettre en état le port de Cherbourg ruiné par les Allemands.
En moins de 100 pages, l’historien Gérard Fournier nous livre une vue large du port artificielle d’Arromanches, au nom de code Mulberry B, sans omettre ce qui a précédé et suivi la mise en place d’une merveille d’ingénierie et de technologie.
Grâce à une documentation habillement choisie, en partie inédite, et replacée exactement dans son contexte, il a su donner à voir et à comprendre un site exceptionnel qui fait toujours la fierté des Britanniques, et est devenu, depuis la Libération l’été 1944, un des hauts-lieux du tourisme de mémoire en Normandie.

The British began the construction of port facilities immediately following D-Day as if it were a gigantic Meccano game. The harbour, situated off four different towns, would be the equivalent of the port of Dover. The objective? To land thousands of troops with arms, supplies and material while waiting for the repair of Cherbourg harbour, destroyed by the Germans.
In less than 100 pages, the historian Gérard Fournier provides a broad view of the Arromanches temporary harbour—given the code name Mulberry B—including preparations leading up to and the aftermath of this technological feat of enginerring and technology.
Carefully chosen documents, some of which have never been published, are put into their historical context, thereby allowing the reader to see and understand this exceptionnal feat that has been the pride of the British and which has become, since the Liberation of 1944, a symbolic destination of D-Day tourism in Normandy.
